Epstein was a partner in Mc4West, LLC, which was awarded in 2003 an $850 million contract to design and construct a 2,385,077 square foot addition to the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois. This expansion, with a concept design by Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates and final design by Epstein and its partners, enabled the McCormick Place Convention Center to remain the largest exhibition facility in the United States. The West Expansion includes approximately 459,000 square feet of exhibition space, 140,750 square feet of meeting/banquet space, a 103,750 square foot ballroom, as well as associated food and support service spaces. This facility is the largest LEED-NC™ Certified building in the United States. Aspects of the building that contributed to its attaining this status include sustainable site credits for brownfield remediation, landscape and heat island reductions and stormwater management that included a 3500 foot long tunnel to recharge Lake Michigan with clean rooftop runoff. Other components of the building’s mechanical efficiency through the use of low-E glass and other high performing envelope elements, energy star roofing and 150,000 square feet of green roof systems.
