| Epstein was the design
architect, as well as the civil and electrical engineer
for this award-winning toll plaza located at Midway
Airport. The main design elements of this project are
a small parking office, a vehicular canopy, a pedestrian
canopy, toll booths and a garden wall. The form and
scale of the main canopy is intended to act as a unifying
element for the various functional pieces. The small
canopy slides under the larger one, allowing for covered
pedestrian access to the toll booths. At night, the
canopy functions as a large reflector, illuminating
the toll plaza and guiding motorists to the exit.
This project was awarded a Distinguished Building Honor
Award and a Divine Detail Award from the Chicago Chapter
of the AIA. Epstein's lighting design also received
an Award of Merit for Lighting Excellence for the Chicago
Lighting Institute and a Chicago Illumination Design
Award from the Chicago Society of Illuminating Engineers. |
