Epstein provided complete
architectural and engineering design for the development
of The Bernard Weinger Jewish Community Center in Northbrook,
Illinois. The Weinger JCC is a 65,000 square foot facility
containing a pool, gym, classrooms, day care center
and nursery school. Located in an industrial/office
park, the 12-acre site is situated at the end of a cul-de-sac,
and between a residential area to the west, a major
expressway to the south, and a railroad right-of-way
to the east.
The building has been developed in two halves; the
one story educational wing to the west, containing the
day-care center and nursery school, and the larger volume
recreational wing to the east - containing the pool,
gym, and locker rooms. Weaving the two halves together
is the main entry/lobby space and the multipurpose room,
all naturally lit by continuous clerestories. The nursery
school has been developed in an L-shape, creating a
protected courtyard/playground oriented to the south.
Tempered by canopies and trellis structures, all classrooms
have direct access to controlled natural light.
The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA)
bestowed a Design Award of Honor to Epstein for this
project. |
