Stony Island Plaza is a community shopping center anchored by Jewel, AJ Wright and One Price Clothing. There is also a variety of convenience oriented retail and restaurants, along with a Jewel Express C-Store. Epstein provided civil design for the entire shopping center, as well as full design and construction documents for the Jewel Express, AJ Wright and One Price Clothing stores, a 18,000 square foot multi-tenant retail building, and a 7,000 square foot multi-tenant retail building.

In addition to preliminary work at Stony Island Plaza, Epstein design services for the plaza provided a uniform look to the buildings, aesthetically connecting the new 7,000 square foot multi-tenant retail building to the existing plaza buildings and the site. In addition, Epstein assisted with fulfilling City of Chicago Green Roof requirements by recommending a system that meets city requirements with minimal structural impact and cost to the owner. The green roof will help reduce the urban heat-island effect on the new building as well as provide some reduction to storm water flows from the roof. As an urban infill project on a brownfield site, Stony Island Plaza incorporates sustainable development concepts in addition to the new green roof and existing closed-loop site storm water management system.
